At Art Under The Sun (Floyd)
Friday, May 9 - 7pm
Sunday, May 11 - 5pm
Saturday, May 17 - 7pm
Floyd´s Young Actors Co-op will be presenting the Amazingly
Wonderful Theater Variety Show on Friday, May 9th, Sunday (7pm), May
11th (5pm) and Saturday, May 17th (7pm). The Young
Actors Co-op is developing quite the reputation for exceptional
performances. Audience members have said, “That was
the best children´s theater I´ve ever
seen!’, “Diverse, talented and
entertaining.’ and “I didn´t want it to
end!’
The Amazingly Wonderful Theater Variety Show is a collection of skits
that cover many varied topics. Two of the skits were written
by Floyd author Hayden Polseno-Hensley; the amusing “Toxic
Skunk’ and the Antique Road show spoof, “Man...
That Thing´s Old!’. There will
be a redo of a YAC classic, “The New Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn’ by Director Rose McCutchan, as well as the
classic Abbott & Costello comedy routine
“Who´s on First’.
Look for the comedic “Schoolhouse
Rock’ by Jason D. Martin and for the more erudite audience
member, there will be “Shakespeare´s Most Famous
Speeches in 14 Minutes or Less’.
The performance will be at the Sun Music Hall and Cultural Arts Center,
302 S. Locust St. Floyd. www.wintersuninc.net/TheSun.htm
Tickets are $6 at the door and $5 pre-sale (children 13 and
under are $3 at the door and $2 pre-sale.) Pre-sale tickets
can be purchased at the Black Water Loft (117 S. Locust St. Floyd) or
off of any of the young actors.
Also, look for a preview of some YAC skits around Floyd, coming to
Ambrosia Farm house concerts, The Country Store, the library and
Oddfellas Cantina. YAC can also do a short theater
performance for your party, group or meeting. You can call
540-745-LOFT or email youngactorsco-op@hotmail.com to make arrangements
or find out about upcoming shows.
Starroot will be the guest artist at Art Under The Sun´s
First Friday Celebration on Friday, May 2nd. Starroot grew up
in Southern Germany and started to create art at an early age, inspired
by nature and her unlimited fantasy. She explored and practiced
conscious dreaming in her early childhood. She is a completely
self-taught artist. When she was 30 years old, she had a life changing
Out of Body experience in a car accident. Starroot opened more and more
for visions coming to her. In 1986 she moved with her two children to
Tennessee and then to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
Starroot has sold many paintings to collectors in Germany and the US
and exhibited in San Francisco and New York and countless art
festivals. In 1997 she was invited to exhibit 40 of her large paintings
at the art department of Radford University in VA. She also was invited
to teach students about her visionary approach to art. Starroot has
been showing her art on the Internet since 1995. She continuously opens
up for positive visions and gives them form in new paintings.
First Friday is your chance to meet this distinctively Floydian artist.
Starroot will also be providing the music for the
evening´s entertainment. Starroot has been a
musician and songwriter all her life. She studied music therapy for
children with Gertrud Orff, the daughter of famous composer Carl Orff.
She performed and recorded her music solo and with various bands in
Germany and the US. Starroot will be performing at First Friday, world
folk spirit songs and Euro blues.
The First Friday event will be held on Friday, May 2nd from 4 PM to 7
PM. Free refreshments will be served. Art Under The
Sun Gallery, 302 S. Locust Street, Floyd, VA 24091

The
Floyd Country Store, home of the Friday Night Jamboree, was constructed
around 1910,
and has been an important part of the community ever since.
The Jamboree has run for many years with "Granny Rules: no smokin', no
drinkin', no spittin', and no cussin'."
The Jamboree starts every Friday at 6:30pm with an hour of bluegrass
gospel music. At 7:30pm, dancers hit the floor, flatfooting and
clogging to the music of regional Bluegrass or Old-Time bands. The
music and dancing continues until at least 10:30pm, with an occasional
two-step, square dance, or waltz thrown in for fun. If the crowd is
willing, at 10:30pm we'll round up one of the jamming groups that can
be found picking outside or upstairs in the store, and they will play
for the crowd until around 11:30pm.
Admission is only $3. Major venue on The Crooked Road.
Hours:
Occurs Every Friday Through Friday, December 25, 2009 (6:30 PM-11:30 PM)

Apple
Ridge Farm Astronomy Club Meeting
Feb. 11th @ 7:30
Apple Ridge Farm Copper Hill (see link below for directions)
Dear Astronomy Enthusiasts,
Apple Ridge Farm has created an astronomy club providing
access
for the public to the GE Dark Sky Observatory. The club is
currently being facilitated by Michael Good GE Volunteer Project
Lead (please see note below for his vita)
Mr. Good designed the observatory to have dual telescope piers. The
first holds a Meade 8" Schmidt Cassegrain (f/10). This is an LX50
– it has sidereal tracking and slow speed controls but no "go
to"
capability. The second scope is a Meade 12" LX200, replete with GOTO
functionality and RS232 port for remote telescope operation. The
observatory was built entirely by Ge volunteers.
Here is a link to the Apple Ridge site/ observatory
information
http://appleridge.org/news/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=38&Itemid=85
This new club had its inaugural meeting on Jan 14th It was
well
attended by a broad spectrum of astronomy enthusiasts. We even had a
break in the cloud cover to view planets & stars
Our next meeting is this Monday at 7:30 at Apple Ridge Farm (Floyd
County) in the basement of the Meador Science Building. This will be a
new club, open to the general public, but will hope to especially
target new people from the Floyd and Roanoke County areas.
We will meet monthly every 2nd Monday of the month (freeing the 3rd
Monday for people wishing to attend the Roanoke Valley Astronomical
Society (RVAS) meetings in Roanoke). Like the RVAS, we will meet from
7:30pm till approximately 9pm monthly.
Every meeting will begin in the Meador building . A decision will be
made early if the weather and road conditions will allow driving up the
gravel road to the observatory (limited parking). If so, the primary
purpose for the club will be to observe at the GE Dark Sky Observatory.
If the weather does not permit, a program will be presented to the
public.
Link to directions to the camp on the Apple Ridge site:

Michael Good's background: Andrew Lewis High School in Salem 1973, UVa
Astro-Physics 1977, and Johns Hopkins MS Computer Science. He has 16
graduate hours in astronomy from UVa as well, most recently doing a
course in Independent Research. He taught astronomy in night school at
Virginia Western Community College and as an Adjunct for Radford
University for a couple Saturday oriented semesters (focus on giving
their education majors some exposure to the sciences).
Michael Good worked at Goddard Space Flight Center the years 1978
through about 1984, and then moved from Md back to northern Virginia
and worked for The Analytic Sciences Corporation in N.Va (Tyson's
