Apple Ridge Farm Astronomy Club Meeting
Feb. 11th @ 7:30
Apple Ridge Farm Copper Hill (see link below for directions)

Dear Astronomy Enthusiasts,

Apple Ridge Farm has created an astronomy club  providingaccess for the public to  the GE Dark Sky Observatory. The club is currently being facilitated by Michael Good GE Volunteer Project Lead  (please see note below for his vita)

Mr. Good designed the observatory to have dual telescope piers. The first holds a Meade 8" Schmidt Cassegrain (f/10). This is an LX50 – it has sidereal tracking and slow speed controls but no "go to" capability. The second scope is a Meade 12" LX200, replete with GOTO functionality and RS232 port for remote telescope operation. Theobservatory was built entirely by Ge volunteers.

Here is a link to the Apple Ridge site/ observatory information

 http://appleridge.org/news/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=38&Itemid=85

This new club had its inaugural meeting on Jan 14th  It was well attended by a broad spectrum of astronomy enthusiasts. We even had abreak in the cloud cover to view planets & stars

Our next meeting is this Monday at 7:30 at Apple Ridge Farm (Floyd County) in the basement of the Meador Science Building. This will be a new club, open to the general public, but will hope to especially target new people from the Floyd and Roanoke County areas.

We will meet monthly every 2nd Monday of the month (freeing the 3rd Monday for people wishing to attend the Roanoke Valley Astronomical Society (RVAS) meetings in Roanoke). Like the RVAS, we will meet from 7:30pm till approximately 9pm monthly.

Every meeting will begin in the Meador building . A decision will be made early if the weather and road conditions will allow driving up thegravel road to the observatory (limited parking). If so, the primarypurpose for the club will be to observe at the GE Dark Sky Observatory. If the weather does not permit, a program will be presented to thepublic.

LINKMUSEUM APOPULAR TRAVELDESTINATION

The O. Winston Link Museum in Downtown Roanoke offers railroad fans, art and history enthusiasts, and community residents a new destination in Western Virginia.  Since the museum's grand opening in January, more than 15,000 people - sixty percent from beyond the RoanokeValley, from most every state in theU.S.and many foreign countries - have admired the exhibition of Link's world-famous work.

Phot by O. Winston Link

O. Winston Link's photos of the last days of steam locomotion along the Norfolk and Western Railway take anostalgic look back to 1950s life - to the world of drive-in theatersand old country stores along the rail lines.  Set in the ruralAppalachian Mountains and locomotive shops, Link captured a simplerera that many in the United States look back to with fond memories.

The museum, housed in the renovated Norfolk and Western Railway passenger station, exhibits more than 225 prints from Link's acclaimed Norfolk and Western project, Link's photographic equipment, and artifacts from N&W's freightand passenger services. Several interactive stations present thechance to examine Link's elaborate lighting arrangements or hear his steam locomotive sound recordings.

"Some of our visitors worked for N&W for more than 30 years - they really enjoy seeing their memories of the railroad displayed for the public" said Kim Pulice, Manager of Museum Operations.  Many visitors leave noticeablystirred by the photographs - reminded of working with the long-gone steam trains and fellow railroad employees.photo by O. Winston Link

Most images are black andwhite, and most are taken at night.  Using hundreds of flashbulbs, Link dramatically lit his subjects to highlight the lifearound the railroad.  Pulice noted, "Link had a knack foraddinga human element to photos of machines.  His most strikingimagesare those that show how  rail interacted with communities andindividuals."  Small communities that rarely got attention from the outside world at that time  - Rural Retreat, Vesuvius, Iager,Green Cove - were documented by Link's cameras.

One of the most popularfeatures in the museum is the 30-minute documentary film "What a Picture I Got," containing interview footage and backgroundinformation about Link.  The film also dramatically documents the troubles with Link's ex-wife, Conchita, and her plans to steal Link'sprints and other equipment.

Additionally, the museum giftshop has expanded since the grand opening to include a diverseinventory.  Children's items - including toys and books - arenow available, and the shop has an extensive line of Norfolk and Westernand O. Winston Link memorabilia.

"We're always adding somethinginteresting.  The 2005 Link calendar just arrived, and we will beselling postcards of Link's photos next month," said Julie Griffith,Gift Shop Manager.   Griffith observed, "Visitorsreallyenjoy those items that exhibit Link's art."

As an added convenience, visitors can now buy joint tickets for the Virginia Museum ofTransportation at a 20 percent savings.  The two museums are connected by a three-block O. Winston Link Railwalk.

TheO.Winston Link Museum is located at 101 Shenandoah Avenue in Roanoke, across from Hotel Roanoke.  The museum is open year-round,Mondaythrough Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5p.m.  Admission: Adults $5, Seniors $4, Children $3. Grouprates are available, and the museum is available for after hours functions.  More information is available on the web at www.linkmuseum.org or by phone at 540-982-5465.

Folk Art from the Permanent Collection
Ongoing
SunTrustSculpture Court

Explore the power and diversity of southern folk art through works from the Art Museum's permanent collection. Pieces from larger yard art installations, including the recently acquiredPumpkin in Wheelbarrow by Virginia artist Miles Carpenter and CrownedFence by James Harold Jennings, contrast with spiritually-centeredworks concerned with life and mortality such as Leroy Almon's painted relief Mr. and Mrs. Satan Fishing and Georgia Blizzard's ceramic Memorial Box. More traditional expressions include Minnie and Garland Adkins' sleek Horse, Burlon Craig's Double Handled Face Jug, and Oscar Spencer's detailed Snake, carved realistically to fool the unexpecting viewer.
