Hotel Floyd Concert Series 2012 to Showcase Leela & Ellie Grace

The Floyd Country Store will host the Hotel Floyd Concert Series 2012, Music in the Mountains.

On Thursday evenings through October 25 from 6-8 pm, local and regional musicians and dancers will perform Old Time, Bluegrass, Blues, Americana music and more!  Admission is free.

This Thursday, May 17th, the series will feature Leela & Ellie Grace.  They are singers, multi-instrumentalists, songwriters, and percussive dancers who grew up traveling across North America performing with their parents as The Grace Family. For the past 13 years, they have been making a name for themselves around the country as a duo, in addition to offering solo appearances, and touring with nationally-known bands. Leela (banjo, guitar) and Ellie (mandolin, guitar, fiddle) have been acclaimed by audiences and fellow musicians alike for their powerful voices, close sisterly harmonies, warm stage presence, and driving old-time instrumentals.

Leela and Ellie's music has a strong grounding in traditional American and Old-time string band styles, but crosses over into the contemporary folk realm, including their own compelling original songs. They recorded three albums with the Grace Family (in addition to doing studio work with other musicians) and have released two recordings as a duo. The sisters have performed at prestigious venues across the United States and Canada , ranging from the Winnipeg Folk Festival to the Lincoln Center in New York City to the Summer Solstice Festival in Los Angeles .

Music begins at 6:00 PM and more information can be found at FloydCountryStore.com. Next week’s concert will be a CD Release event with fingerstyle guitar player and fiddler Jesse Milnes on May 24.

The Floyd Country store will host an Old Time Country Dance on Saturday, May 19 starting at 7:30 PM with the Whitetop Mountain Band.  Get your dancing shoes on and join us for this favorite old time dance tradition.

The Floyd Country Store is famous for old time dancing, and we feel truly honored that some of the great Appalachian old time bands love to play on our stage. One of our regular Saturday Night bands is The Whitetop Mountain Band, a family-based band from the highest mountains of Virginia . Whitetop , Virginia is an area rich in the old time music tradition and this band has done much to preserve the Whitetop region’s style of old time fiddling and banjo picking with their teaching and performances.

When they strike up the music this Saturday night the dance floor will start to hum. There will be flatfooting, clogging, two stepping and some square dances. Get up and join in or just sit back and watch the high energy crowd while you listen to some of the finest heritage mountain music around.

Tickets for the Old Time Country Dance are $8.00 and are available at the door only.

The Floyd Contra Dance

Second Saturday, Floyd Contra Dance happens this Saturday, May 12, at the Sun Music Hall. It's easy relaxed fun - especially when one can swing and glide across the grand wooden floor of a former sewing factory, now part of Dogtown Roadhouse. Always with live music, this month's band is Floorplay from Charlottesville with NC caller, Dean Snipes. Contra dancing is just plain fun and can also provide fine aerobic energy.

Floorplay has an energized, musically-aware sound that can fill an entire hall. The band's good instincts result in a wide repertoire of styles that flow freely between traditional contra dance tunes, French Canadian, Middle Eastern, rags, old-time, Klezmer, and swing dance rhythms. Floorplay features Rya Martin on piano, Paul Rosen on mandolin, fiddle, accordion, and Aaron Lamb on drums.

The caller, Dean Snipes, has been calling contra dances for twenty years all over the Southeast. He is known for his easy-going ability to teach dance steps and contra moves with ease.

Join us for the monthly Floyd contra dance at the Sun Music Hall, Winter Sun, 302 S. Locust St., Floyd. The dance starts at 8 p.m. with a beginner lesson at 7:35. Come as you are, wear soft flexible shoes for dancing, and the caller will teach each dance. Come to dance or come to listen - no partner needed. Blue Ridge Country Dancers' contra dances are held in Floyd on the second Saturday of each month, September through June. Dance admission is $8.00. Students with ID $6.50. Listener admission $5.00. www.floydcontradance.org

    FloydJAMS - A Crooked Road/ JAM Program:
A Traditional Music Program for Youth Starts in Floyd

Floyd County students in grades 4 through 8 now have opportunity to learn the traditional music of the region in a new after school program at Floyd Elementary School .  The program, FloydJAMS - A Crooked Road / JAM Program, is providing almost 80 students with instruction on fiddle, banjo or guitar from exceptional traditional music instructors on Monday afternoons.

The Crooked Road: Virginia's Heritage Music Trail, Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM, Inc.) and The Jacksonville Center for the Arts have been working with Floyd County business and community leaders, educators, and school system representatives to create this new program for students.  "We are so excited to be able to offer this opportunity to the students of Floyd County Public Schools" said Lisa Pluska, Director of Instruction with Floyd County Public Schools. "Floyd has such a rich heritage of music and for FloydJAMS to come in and partner with the school system to continue this tradition is a true blessing".

FloydJAMS is modeled after offerings through Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM Inc), which has similar programs in Virginia , North Carolina , and South Carolina . "JAM Inc, has allowed us to tap into their years of experience and hard work and continues to assist us in creating our own version of a JAM program tailored for the Floyd community" says FloydJAMS Director, Heather Krantz.  "It has been a dream of mine to help bring more music education programming here and The Crooked Road, JAM Inc, the Jacksonville Center and many other local folks and businesses have helped make that happen."

The Jacksonville Center for the Arts is the Nonprofit Sponsor for FloydJAMS.  "Through FloydJAMS, these students will have better access to opportunities to learn how to play a music instrument, which can have a positive lifelong impact in their lives, including their academic performance.", said Jacksonville Center Director, John McEnhill.

The Crooked Road promotes economic development in Southwest Virginia by promoting the region's unique heritage music. FloydJAMS is funded in part by The Crooked Road, the Appalachian Regional Commission, The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission, The Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.  Additional Support has been provided by Mitchell Music Company, the Floyd Country Store, the D'Addario Foundation, The Blue Ridge Music Makers Guild, the Floyd Moose Lodge, Plenty!, Citizens Telephone Cooperative and several anonymous donors and area businesses.

    Dear Astronomy Enthusiasts,
Apple Ridge Farm has created an astronomy club providing access for the public to the GE Dark Sky Observatory. The club is currently being facilitated by Michael Good GE Volunteer Project Lead  (please see note below for his vita)
Mr. Good designed the observatory to have dual telescope piers. The first holds a Meade 8" Schmidt Casse grain (f/10). This is an LX50 – it has sidereal tracking and slow speed controls but no "go to" capability. The second scope is a Meade 12" LX200, replete with GOTO functionality and RS232 port for remote telescope operation. The observatory was built entirely by Ge volunteers.
Here is a link to the Apple Ridge site/ observatory information
     http://appleridge.org/news/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=38&Itemid=85
We will meet monthly every 2nd Monday of the month (freeing the 3rd Monday for people wishing to attend the Roanoke Valley Astronomical Society (RVAS) meetings in Roanoke). Like the RVAS, we will meet from 7:30pm till approximately 9pm monthly.
Every meeting will begin in the Meador building . A decision will be made early if the weather and road conditions will allow driving up thegravel road to the observatory (limited parking). If so, the primarypurpose for the club will be to observe at the GE Dark Sky Observatory. If the weather does not permit, a program will be presented to thepublic.

LINK MUSEUM A POPULAR TRAVEL DESTINATION

The O. Winston Link Museum in Downtown Roanoke offers railroad fans, art and history enthusiasts, and community residents a new destination in Western Virginia.  Since the museum's grand opening in January, more than 15,000 people - sixty percent from beyond the Roanoke Valley, from most every state in the U.S.and many foreign countries - have admired the exhibition of Link's world-famous work.

    O. Winston Link's photos of the last days of steam locomotion along the Norfolk and Western Railway take a nostalgic look back to 1950s life - to the world of drive-in theaters and old country stores along the rail lines.  Set in the rural Appalachian Mountains and locomotive shops, Link captured a simpler era that many in the United States look back to with fond memories.

The museum, housed in the renovated Norfolk and Western Railway passenger station, exhibits more than 225 prints from Link's acclaimed Norfolk and Western project, Link's photographic equipment, and artifacts from N&W's freight and passenger services. Several interactive stations present the chance to examine Link's elaborate lighting arrangements or hear his steam locomotive sound recordings.

"Some of our visitors worked for N&W for more than 30 years - they really enjoy seeing their memories of the railroad displayed for the public" said Kim Pulice, Manager of Museum Operations.  Many visitors leave noticeably stirred by the photographs - reminded of working with the long-gone steam trains and fellow railroad employees.photo by O. Winston Link

Most images are black and white, and most are taken at night.  Using hundreds of flashbulbs, Link dramatically lit his subjects to highlight the life around the railroad.  Pulice noted, "Link had a knack for adding a human element to photos of machines.  His most striking images are those that show how  rail interacted with communities and individuals."  Small communities that rarely got attention from the outside world at that time  - Rural Retreat, Vesuvius, Iager, Green Cove - were documented by Link's cameras.

One of the most popular features in the museum is the 30-minute documentary film "What a Picture I Got," containing interview footage and background information about Link.  The film also dramatically documents the troubles with Link's ex-wife, Conchita, and her plans to steal Link's prints and other equipment.

Additionally, the museum gift shop has expanded since the grand opening to include a diverse inventory.  Children's items - including toys and books - are now available, and the shop has an extensive line of Norfolk and Western and O. Winston Link memorabilia.

"We're always adding something interesting.  "

As an added convenience, visitors can now buy joint tickets for the Virginia Museum of Transportation at a 20 percent savings.  The two museums are connected by a three-block O. Winston Link Rail walk.

The O.Winston Link Museum is located at 101 Shenandoah Avenue in Roanoke, across from Hotel Roanoke.  The museum is open year-round, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5p.m.  Admission: Adults $5, Seniors $4, Children $3. Group rates are available, and the museum is available for after hours functions.  More information is available on the web at www.linkmuseum.org or by phone at 540-982-5465.

Folk Art from the Permanent Collection
    Ongoing
    Sun Trust Sculpture Court

Explore the power and diversity of southern folk art through works from the Art Museum's permanent collection. Pieces from larger yard art installations, including the recently acquired Pumpkin in Wheelbarrow by Virginia artist Miles Carpenter and CrownedFence by James Harold Jennings, contrast with spiritually-centered works concerned with life and mortality such as Leroy Almon's painted relief Mr. and Mrs. Satan Fishing and Georgia Blizzard's ceramic Memorial Box. More traditional expressions include Minnie and Garland Adkins' sleek Horse, Burlon Craig's Double Handled Face Jug, and Oscar Spencer's detailed Snake, carved realistically to fool the unexpecting viewer.
